Minor league baseball, higher education learning complex on Joplin developer's list

David Wallace of Wallace Bajjali has just finished outlining to the Joplin City Council a development project that could include a minor league baseball team and a higher education learning complex.

Wallace said he had talked with Texas League officials about the possibility of Joplin having a minor league team and received positive feedback from them. He said, though, that there had not yet been a marketing study for the Joplin area.

Wallace, the former mayor of Sugarland, Texas, talked about the development in that community, which had a population of 25,000 about 20 years ago and has more than 160,000 people today. His firm has also been involved in large-scale development projects in Amarillo and Waco.

The higher education complex could be built in downtown Joplin, Wallace said.

The developer asked for authorization for the Joplin Redevelopment Committee to begin purchasing land.

Wallace added that the projects would be paid for through grants and private investment.
