Welcome to RoleplayGateway! Don't worry about the confusion. This is a big site, and definitely not uncommon for someone who has little experience with the site. I have a few links that you may find helpful.
The User manual talks about what roleplaying is, the key to character creation, and other useful tips and tricks that'll help you out.
And the rules are here for your guidance. Follow them, and you wont' have any issues. :)
Feel free to check out our Interest Check and Roleplayers Wanted thread to find roleplays that cater to your specific needs. If you'd like, you can let me know specifically what you prefer, so I can help you find roleplays to get started with. :) You don't have to join a roleplay before making one. If you just want to make roleplays you should feel free to, and if you'd rather join other ones, then it's totally up to you. :)
