British helicopter hunt for 'lion on the loose in Essex'

British police on Monday deployed firearms officers and a helicopter as they launched a lion hunt following reports of a cat-like beast roaming in a field in Essex.

"The large cat, believed to be a lion, was seen in fields off Earls Hall Drive in St Oysth, near Clacton, just before 7pm on Sunday," an Essex police spokesman said.

Residents living in the area are being advised to stay indoors.

Officers from Essex Police have been working with experts from Colchester Zoo who believe the reports to be genuine after being shown a photograph from a member of the public.

"There is an increased police presence in the area, including firearms officers and the police helicopter searching near where it was spotted," the spokesman said.

Police are also trying to establish where the lion may have come from. Anyone who sees the lion is advised to call 999.

Roger Lord, of Earls Hall Farm, St Osyth, said a picture of the suspected lion had been taken by residents in caravans on the farm land and passed to police.

"The first thing we knew about it was a phone call from the police last night," he said.

"I am sceptical - I think it might just well be a large domestic cat but they certainly saw something that they were were concerned about and they went down the right route to the police.

Che Kevlin said he heard what he believed to be a roar whilst out walking his dog last night.

"I heard a loud roar at 10pm. It sounded like a lion," he told the BBC.

"It was worrying as we had just been for a walk with the dog. We saw the police helicopter but thought it was just searching for a person.

"It sounded like the roar of a lion. We have a field and wood just behind our fence, so you never know."

Two parody Twitter accounts for the lion have already sprung up under the handles @EssexLion ("Roar bruv, I'm a lion, ain't I?") and @TheEssexLion ("in your garden").

Elsewhere on Twitter, many were joking about the lion being let loose on the cast of popular British reality show, The Only Way Is Essex.

Other users claimed the lion had taken refuge in the Ecuadoran embassy in London, where WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has claimed asylum. David Schneider wrote under the handle @davidschneider: "This is getting interesting. The Essex Lion has just taken refuge in the Ecuadorian (sic) embassy."

Biden postpones Florida travel over Isaac

Tampa - Vice President Joe Biden, who had scaled back planned campaign events in Florida this week because of the approach of Tropical Storm Isaac, has postponed his visit to the state altogether, the Obama campaign announced Saturday.

"Due to the statewide state of emergency declared in Florida, Vice President Biden's travel to Orlando and St. Augustine, Florida on Tuesday, August 28 for campaign events has been postponed," the campaign said in a statement. It was released shortly after the Republican National Committee said the party's convention events set for Monday would would now be postponed.

"This change in schedule is being taken to ensure that all law enforcement and emergency management resources across the state can continue their focus on ensuring the safety of those who might be impacted by the storm," the campaign said.

Biden had initially been slated to visit Tampa and other cities in Florida as part of an effort to counter the Republican message as the party readies to formally nominate Mitt Romney as its presidential candidate.

Obama vs. Romney 101: Women's issues

President Obama won the women?s vote four years ago, and he?ll need to again to win reelection, given Mitt Romney?s strength among male voters. The Obama campaign has long argued that Mr. Romney is waging a ?war on women.? Team Romney says it?s Obama who is waging war on women, with policies that have harmed the economic recovery ? which harms women.

Here are some of the women?s issues on which the candidates differ.

1. Health care

When fully implemented in 2014, Mr. Obama's health-care law will add millions of women to the insurance rolls. If Romney succeeds in repealing the law, that will eliminate the subsidies and guarantees of coverage that benefit women. It will also end the requirement that insurers cover preventive services such as mammograms, prenatal care, and certain cancer screenings with no co-pays.

Starting in August 2012, insurers must also cover well-woman visits, domestic-violence screening, and breast-feeding supplies at no additional charge.? Insurance plans must also cover birth control, though religious institutions are exempted (see next item).

Romney?s fix for health care is to repeal the law, and allow innovation at the state level that promotes competition among insurers and makes coverage more affordable. His campaign website does not address women?s health issues in particular, but the campaign says women would certainly benefit from the flexibility Romney would grant states.

States can help uninsured women through public-private partnerships and subsidies, and they can help chronically ill women gain access to high-risk pools and reinsurance. Romney also says he would ?unshackle? health-savings accounts by allowing funds to be used for insurance premiums.
