Movie review: 'Robot & Frank' a touch too whimsical | The Salt Lake ...

Frank (Frank Langella) plays an ex-thief in the early stages of Alzheimer's who is aided by a robot, in the comedy "Robot & Frank." Courtesy Samuel Goldwyn Films

A little whimsy can go a long way, but an overdose of whimsy threatens to capsize the comedy-drama "Robot & Frank."

Set in the near future, it centers on Frank (Frank Langella), who lives alone in upstate New York and is in the early stages of Alzheimer?s. His son, Hunter (James Marsden), over the objections of his globe-hopping sister, Madison (Liv Tyler), buys a health-maintenance robot to tend to Frank.

?Robot and Frank?

Opens Friday, Aug. 31, at the Broadway Centre Cinemas; rated PG-13 for some language; 89 minutes. For more movie reviews, visit nowsaltlake.com/movies.

Frank objects at first, but soon discovers the robot can be quite handy ? and is a great help when Frank decides to revive his career as a jewel thief.

Director Jake Schreier and screenwriter Christopher D. Ford, both making their first feature, get serious at times in handling Frank?s fading memory and a tender relationship with the town librarian (Susan Sarandon) ? but that sometimes gets lost in the too-precious comedy. They get the robot right, with fluid movement (by dancer Rachael Ma) and canned warmth in its user-friendly voice (performed by Peter Sarsgaard).

Langella, who?s always worth watching, balances Frank?s slow decline and his puckish rebellion against others? expectations of old age.

Charter school attendance on the rise in Utah

NORTH SALT LAKE ? Thousands of Utah children are returning to the classroom this week, but many aren?t returning to their traditional, neighborhood schools. Nearly 10 percent of Utah students now attend charter schools.
Pacific Heritage Academy, is one of seven charter schools opening this year. Many families come from the nearby Rose Park neighborhood, but others come from a much longer distance.
?We have families coming from The Nebo School District as well, so even south of Provo,? ?Ofa Moea?i, the school?s executive director, said Saturday at the school?s grand opening celebration.

Students ready for International Baccalaurate program at Ogden High School

OGDEN ? In the sixth grade, Laura Castro and her friends set a goal to go to college.
Their teachers, counselors and parents told them to shoot for the stars when they started middle school and to plan to go to college no matter what.
Last year, when their high school counselors told them about the International Baccalaureate program, which was coming to Ogden High School, they were intrigued.
But the six girls, who begin their junior year at Ogden High School on Monday, were faced with a dilemma: They were missing a full year of the required math courses needed to get into the IB program.

New Laws, Programs Expand E-Learning Options Several states now require districts to give students more choices

Lawmakers in Utah recently mandated that school districts allow high school students to take online courses from state-approved providers. In Florida, large districts must give students online-course options from at least three different providers. Recent legislation in Georgia altered the funding structure for students who take virtual courses; the action provides an incentive for districts to encourage students to try online classes.
In recent years, several states have enacted laws that require more choices for students who want to try taking courses online, outside the offerings of brick-and-mortar school districts. In some cases, such legislation?as in Florida and Utah?is a companion to requirements that students take at least one online course before graduating from high school.
The new reality of such requirements, however, means that districts are often facing a significant change in the way they provide options to students. In some places, the legislation has even introduced a level of competition among providers?which sometimes are the districts themselves?in an effort to boost the quality of offerings. At times, the measures have spawned new methods of cooperation and collaboration.

Study reveals potentially hazardous chemical in school supplies

A new report reveals toxic chemicals linked to asthma and birth defects that are banned in toys were found to be widespread in children?s vinyl back-to-school supplies, according to a chej.org news release.
Seventy-five percent of children?s school supplied tested in a laboratory have elevated levels of toxic footholds, including popular Disney, Spiderman, and Dora branded school supplies such as vinyl lunch boxes, backpacks, 3-ring binders, raincoats and rain boots, the news release continues.

Public High Schools Are Not Doing Their Jobs U.S. News & World Report op-ed by James R. Harrigan, Antony Davies (James R. Harrigan is a fellow of the Institute for Political Economy at Utah State University. Antony Davies is associate professor of economics at Duquesne University.)

With the start of the new academic year, results from last year?s ACT college admissions tests have been made public, and the results are disturbing. The incoming freshman class is woefully unprepared for college. The class of 2016, as a group, failed all four subjects the test assesses: English, math, reading, and science. According to ACT, only 25 percent of students are proficient in all four subjects. Sixty percent came up short in two of the four subject areas, while more than 25 percent failed to demonstrate proficiency in any subject at all. If the point of high school is to prepare students for college, high schools are clearly failing. Unfortunately, this doesn?t stop the undereducated masses from heading off to the ivory tower each year.
Today, ready or not, nearly 70 percent of American high school graduates go on to college. By comparison, only 43 percent of Americans attend church regularly, and only 51 percent are married. College, it seems, is far more popular than either God or spouses. As unprepared as they are, students are well-advised to go to college just the same. The time has passed when a high school diploma and a good work ethic were enough for a comfortable life. That?s not because life demands more highly educated workers, but because high schools are producing such poorly educated workers.

ACT and race
Salt Lake Tribune letter from Sydney Ward

It?s fantastic that more Utah high school students are thinking of the future and taking the ACT college entrance exam (?More Utah kids taking ACT, but scores deflating,? Tribune, Aug. 23).
However, with more schools administering the test during school, they are encouraging every student to take it, even though some may not want to. Not every student is prepared to take such a difficult test. It takes a lot of time to prepare. Pressuring unprepared students to take it during school just wastes tax dollars.

Let?s sharpen our pencils
(Provo) Daily Herald letter from Kevin Moffitt

I have always been surprised that voters in Utah approve school bond proposals the first time they are proposed. Having lived in other states, school bond proposals are not always approved the first go around. What always happens after a bond is rejected is school administrator sharpen their pencils, lower their bond request, and make a new proposal. It is amazing to me that with a lower bond, they are still able to accomplish what they originally wanted.
This causes me to ALWAYS question a request for more money by the government. Have they really sharpened their pencils? Most of the time ? they have not.

Appreciation for LHS dress code
(Logan) Herald Journal letter from Jan Weekes

I?m a mother of young men who attend Logan High School and I would like to thank the teachers and administrators for the work you do in keeping the students? adherence to the dress code in the handbook. The last few years my boys have complained about how the girls are wearing inappropriate clothing and not having anything said to them. I know one of my sons asked a girl not to wear that kind of clothing, which started a conversation as to why he didn?t like it. He explained that he thought girls who wear modest clothing are more attractive than girls who don?t. Because of what he said, she was more selective in what she wore after that. I am grateful he could express himself to his peer and I, too, would like to add my voice to his and let the students know that as a parent I appreciate those young men and women who try to follow the rules and understand why they are there and thank them and the faculty who make sure the rules are followed to make a better environment for my children to learn in. So thank you and keep up the good work!

The Parent-Trigger War Escalates
Shades of Faubus: A school board defies a judge?s order.
Wall Street Journal editorial

It has come to this in California?s saga over ?parent-trigger? education reform: A local school board is openly defying a judge?s order, with one member declaring ?If I?m found in contempt of court, I brought my own handcuffs, take me away.? So now the stalwarts of the status quo will break the law rather than allow parents school choice.
A California Superior Court judge ruled last month that several hundred parents in Adelanto, California had successfully pulled the nation?s first parent trigger to force change at their children?s failing public school. The judge ?commanded? the Adelanto school board to let the parents ?immediately begin the process of soliciting and selecting? proposals to transform Desert Trails Elementary into a charter school.
At a recent hearing, the school board unanimously refused. Instead, the board wants to implement what it calls ?alternative governance? reforms: a somewhat longer school day, a ?technology infusion into the classroom,? better training of teachers, and a ?community advisory committee? to oversee such changes. That is, the board wants to keep tinkering around the edges of a school that?s been classified as failing for six years in a row, with 70% of sixth-graders not proficient in English or math.

5 Questions with Gov. Scott Walker
?Government needs to reduce costs for job creation?
Washington Times commentary by editorial page editor Brett M. Decker

Scott Walker is the 45th governor of Wisconsin. Although hailing from a blue state that has voted Democratic for president in the last six elections dating back to 1988, Mr. Walker, a Republican, was elected governor in 2010 with 52 percent of the electorate and beat down a union-driven recall in June by an impressive 7 points. His career in public service includes eight years as the Milwaukee County Executive and five terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly. Before entering the political fray, Mr. Walker worked for IBM and the American Red Cross. Interested in civic events early in life, he was a representative to Boys Nation and an Eagle Scout. You can find out more about the governor?s policies at:walker.wi.gov.
?
Decker: Every spring around graduation time, embarrassing studies are released that show large majorities of U.S. high-school graduates don?t have a grasp of basic math skills or know fundamental details about our history such as in what century the Civil War occurred. It?s fair to say there is a national crisis in public education. You have a comprehensive vision for education reform. What can be done to reverse this dangerous slide?
Walker: In 2010, Megan Sampson was named an Outstanding First Year Teacher in Wisconsin. A week later, she got a layoff notice from Milwaukee Public Schools because her collective-bargaining contract required staffing decisions to be made based on seniority. We changed the system. Now, school districts can make staffing decisions based on merit and pay based on performance. Ultimately, this will keep the best and the brightest in our classrooms and improve education for all children.
Beyond reforming collective bargaining, we need to empower parents so they can make educational decisions for their children based on verifiable data. This involves a number of different items ranging from giving them the tools and choice to utilize virtual schools or charter schools to empowering them with information about the performance of all area public and private schools. We are in the final stages of implementing a school-accountability system, which will provide parents with data-based ratings for all area schools. Rewarding excellence and empowering parents will provide positive results for all students.

Convention?s Youngest Delegate Wants Local Control for Schools Education Week commentary by columnist Nirvi Shah

Among the thousands of delegates who have converged on Tampa this week is one just shy of the legal voting age.
High school senior Evan Draim, who has been dubbed the GOP?s version of Doogie Howser (and led to at least one comparison of Gen Xer Paul Ryan with Grandma Moses) won his delegate spot last May at only 17.
But don?t let his age fool you. Draim?the youngest-ever delegate, by one longtime Republican convention staffer?s estimate?can talk about any subject near and dear to the Republican Party agenda. He can quote unemployment figures and cites industries he believes have been ruined by the Obama administration. He?s thrilled at the potential for Virginia, a swing state, to help deliver Mitt Romney the presidency.

What I learned teaching your kids
The popular actor devoted a year to teaching in high school. His new book has timely advice.
USA Weekend commentary by Tony Danza, known from TV?s Taxi and Who?s the Boss?

There are at least two harder jobs than acting ? one is teaching and the other is writing a book about teaching. I?ve now done both, having gone toe-to-toe with a class of Philadelphia 10th-graders for an entire year and then written about it. And, let me tell you, when it comes to teaching, perfection is elusive.
The question I still wrestle with is, ?In the midst of a tough economy and continuous budget cutting, how do we send a message to students that being in school and making the most of their time there is important??

Charters draw students from private schools, study finds A Rand Corp. study finds that the switch from private to public schools has added $1.8 billion to public funding obligations.
Los Angeles Times

Charter schools are pulling in so many onetime private school students that they are placing an ever-greater burden on taxpayers, who must fund an already strained public education system, according to research released Tuesday.
The study by a Rand Corp. economist found that more than 190,000 students nationwide had left a private school for a charter by the end of the 2008 school year, the most recent year for which data was available.
And charter schools have exploded in number since that time. The Los Angeles Unified School District has more charters, 193, than any system in the country.
This student migration is especially apparent in large urban areas, where charters are drawing 32% of their elementary grade enrollment from private schools, study author Richard Buddin said. The percentage for middle schools is 23%, and 15% for high schools
Charters are free, independently managed public schools that are exempt from some rules governing traditional schools. Most are not unionized.
About 10% of students nationwide attend private schools ? a number that is dropping.

Williams named new head of Texas Education Agency Associated Press via Houston Chronicle

AUSTIN, Texas ? A tea party favorite who worked for the U.S. Department of Education under President George H.W. Bush was tapped Monday to become Texas? top education official, and he?ll take over just weeks before the start of major litigation over the way the state funds its public schools.
On the first day of school for many students across the state, Gov. Rick Perry chose Michael Williams to lead the Texas Education Agency, which oversees Texas? 1,200 school districts and charter schools. The former Texas Railroad Commission chairman begins work Sept. 1, ahead of a trial in a lawsuit filed by most of the state?s school districts after lawmakers cut more than $5 billion in public education funding and grants.
Williams is succeeding Robert Scott, who stepped down in July after five years at the agency?s helm. Scott had made headlines earlier this year by suggesting that too much emphasis on standardized testing across the state was a ?perversion? of the testing regime?s original intent.

Biggest Back-to-School Purchase: A New Home?
Wall Street Journal

Last year, Nicole Salama and her husband moved from a ranch-style house in San Mateo, Calif. to a larger home in nearby Hillsborough, a forested community south of San Francisco and one of the wealthiest and most expensive towns in the state.
The main reason why they moved? Their son Benjamin, age 5, starts school this week.
?We definitely moved here for the schools,? Ms. Salama, who works in sales for a healthcare company, says. ?We wanted out kids to be with other children whose parents had as much involvement with education. The people here have similar backgrounds to ours ? Those are the types of people you want to become friends with, and you want your friends to become friends with.?
Across the country, parents are preparing this week to send their children back to school, spending hundreds of dollars on books, uniforms and cold cuts for brown bag lunches. Another key back-to-school purchase for many families is a new home.

Drop in high school test results causes UK angst Associated Press

LONDON ? Britain?s top teachers are unhappy with their students? grades, but it?s the government they?re blaming.
Results for British high school test exams have fallen for the first time in 24 years, prompting some educators to accuse the government of arbitrarily toughening standards in a bid to curb grade inflation.
The fall in tests for science, English, and other subjects has also has drawn angst from children and parents, who have voiced fears that students have been penalized to make a political statement.
Education Secretary Michael Gove has denied leaning on evaluators to give high school students a tough time, but some principals are demanding that tests be re-graded.

4 Responses to the Challenge of Same-Sex Unions

?Dr Albert Mohler writes:
August 24th 2012

In the world but not of the world? From the very beginning, the church has faced the challenge of responding to external events, trends, ideologies, and controversies. By definition, the church does not get to choose these challenges, but they have been thrust upon Christians by the world. The question always comes down to this: What now?

That question seems especially urgent in light of the emergence of same-sex unions and marriage in the United States and the world over. How must the church answer this challenge?

To answer that question, we need to think about the speed of the moral revolution that has pushed this question to the forefront of our culture. In less than a generation, homosexuality has gone from being almost universally condemned to being almost fully normalized in the larger society.

We are facing a true moral inversion ? a system of moral understandings turned upside down. Where homosexuality was even recently condemned by the society, now it is considered a sin to believe that homosexuality is wrong in any way. A new sexual morality has replaced the old, and those who hold to the old morality are considered morally deficient. The new moral authorities have one central demand for the church: get with the new program.

This puts the true church, committed to the authority of God?s Word, in a very difficult cultural position. Put simply, we cannot join the larger culture in normalizing homosexuality and restructuring society to match this new morality. Recognizing same-sex unions and legalizing same-sex marriage is central to this project.

Liberal churches and denominations are joining the project, some more quickly and eagerly than others. The cultural pressure is formidable, and only churches that are truly committed to Scripture will withstand the pressure to accommodate themselves and their message to the new morality.

What, then, is the true church to do?

First, we must stand without compromise on the authority of the Bible and the principles of sexual conduct and morality that God has revealed so clearly in His Word. The Bible?s sexual morality is grounded in the creation of humanity in God?s image; we are created as male and female and given the gift of sex within the marriage covenant ? and only within the marriage covenant between one man and one woman for as long they both shall live.

The easiest way to summarize the Bible?s teaching on sexuality is to begin with God?s blessing of sex only within the marriage covenant between a man and a woman. Then, just remember that sex outside of that covenant relationship, whatever its form or expression, is explicitly forbidden. Christians know that these prohibitions are for our good and that rejecting them is tantamount to a moral rebellion against God Himself. We also know that the Bible forbids all same-sex sexual acts and behaviors. Thus, we know that homosexuality is a sin, that blessing it in any way is also sin, and that normalizing sin cannot lead to human happiness.

Second, we must realize what is at stake. Marriage is first and foremost a public institution. It has always been so. Throughout history, societies have granted special recognition and privileges to marriage because it is the central organizing institution of human culture. Marriage regulates relationships, sexuality, human reproduction, lineage, kinship, and family structure. But marriage has also performed another crucial function ? it has regulated morality.

This is why the challenge of samesex unions is so urgent and important. Redefining marriage is never simply about marriage. It leads to the redefinition of reproduction and parenthood, produces a legal revolution with vast consequences, replaces an old social order with something completely new, and forces the adoption of a new morality. This last point is especially important. Marriage teaches morality by its very centrality to the culture. With a new concept of marriage comes a new morality, enforced by incredible social pressure and, eventually, legal threats.

Third, we must act quickly to teach Christians the truth about marriage and God?s plan for sexuality in all its fullness and beauty. We must develop pastoral approaches that are faithful to Scripture and arm this generation of believers to withstand the cultural pressure and respond in ways that are truly Christian.

Fourth, and most important, this challenge must drive us to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Christians must be the first to understand this challenge in light of the gospel. After all, we know spiritual rebellion when we see it, for we ourselves were rebels before God?s grace conquered us. We know what moral confusion means because without the light of God?s Word, we are just as confused.

There is no rescue from the self-deception of sin except for the salvation that is ours in Jesus Christ. While doing everything else required of us in this challenge, the faithful church must center its energies on the one thing that we know we must do above all else ? preach, teach, and live the gospel of Jesus Christ.

4 Recruiting Tips For Social Media Marketing - Andrea Bolder

Posted on August 27, 2012

social_media_recruitingWhile most people move online to get out of the ?hard work? that comes with prospecting and recruiting people into your homes based business, the reality is that just as many people suck at social media marketing as they do with traditional methods?

Why?

Because they haven?t been trained correctly on how to build a business using online marketing methods.

I am sure you?ve been slapped in the face with someones business opportunity link without them even asking you what your name is. Not only? is this annoying but it dilutes the power of social media marketing.

So let?s start with the basics

What is Social Media Marketing?

Social media marketing is not just to act of prospecting and recruiting people into your business using social media, it is a great way to network, meet new people and get to know about them, socially.

You should never have a shortage of ?mlm leads? when you have millions and millions of people online that you can attract and prospect. It is virtually impossible to run out of leads.

So how can you take advantage of this endless stream of leads?

Here are 4 Tips For Recruiting On Social Networks

1. Never slam people with unsolicited links. In fact you should never even mention your company and products unless the prospect asks you first. You?ll see that many times social networkers will beat people over the head with their opportunity just because it?s the new, hot thing being promoted online. This is not effective and it can actually damage your reputation.

2. Engagement is the name of the game.? People are too smart and savvy to fall for the one conversion pitch. Be friendly, be open about carrying on a conversation and keep the door open to future correspondence. Don?t think you have to close someone the very first time you talk to them. More often than not you?ll just ruin your chances of ever getting them to look at your opportunity in the future even if they may have been interested.

3. Control the conversation by listening. People like to share information with others when they get the feeling someone really cares about what they have to say. You don?t have to talk, talk, talk to control the direction of the conversation, in fact, it?s quite the opposite. Ask questions?I guarantee that when people stop talking about themselves, they?ll feel comfortable enough to ask you about your business and life simply because you took the time to show genuine interest in them.

4. Also be in qualifying mode. A huge part of asking questions is to get a feel about someone. Not everyone you talk to is someone you actually want to work with. When you are doing your social media marketing, look for qualities, traits and characteristics that make you feel good about working with someone. What makes social networking so awesome is that you can take a look at the friends a potential prospect has, how they converse online with other people and what they post. There have been many times where I have purposely not mentioned my business because the person I was talking to was not the type of person i wanted to work with. That?s what makes building your own business so appealing ? you choose who you work with.

So hopefully these 4 tips for recruiting on social networks helps you. Begin using them and you?ll see a huge difference in you social media marketing success.

Romney ready to claim prize, wife to argue case

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Poised at last to claim the prize he's been chasing for years, Mitt Romney barreled into his convention city Tuesday as Republicans worked to showcase him at the Republican National Convention as a man who understands everyday Americans and a leader who can fix the economy.

Ann Romney, the woman who knows him best, said she was tickled that her husband would be on hand for her evening speech to the convention. And tough-talking New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was ready to make the case in his keynote address for Romney as the right leader to get the economy moving.

"It's going to be fun for him to be there," Mrs. Romney told reporters before touching down in Tampa, where she headed to the convention hall for a microphone check, practicing with a few lines from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Running mate Paul Ryan arrived in the convention city, too, still tweaking the speech he'll deliver Wednesday.

But with New Orleans and much of the Gulf Coast waiting fearfully to see where Hurricane Isaac makes landfall, politics became an awkward enterprise and no one knows what sort of party the GOP gathering will turn out to be.

After a one-day weather delay, the convention proceeds according to its latest script: delivering Romney the presidential nomination he fought years to achieve, calling the party to unify around him and setting the stage for the final stretch of the hotly contested campaign to unseat President Barack Obama.

Obama, not one to cede the spotlight, tended to presidential business, urging Gulf Coast residents to prepare for the approaching storm. And then he headed out on a three-state campaign trip focused on winning over college students.

Romney has finalized his own Thursday convention speech, said aide Stuart Stevens, and it will be "a clear vision of a Romney presidency and very much from his heart about America and why he wants to be president and what his presidency would be like."

The cash demands of campaigning never far away, Romney worked two fundraisers into the schedule for his first day in Tampa on Tuesday, while Ann Romney and Ryan both popped out new email appeals for campaign contributions. Obama campaign manager Jim Messina was out with his own fundraising appeal for cash to fight what he said were sure to be distortions at the GOP convention.

Christie, ready for his keynote address, said that for those Americans who aren't yet sold on Romney, "you start turning it around tonight."

In a round of morning talk-show appearances, Christie said Ann Romney would humanize her husband for the nation, and that his own speech would make the case for Romney's economic credentials. But ultimately, Christie said, it will up to Romney himself "to let the American people see who he is."

Meeting with Michigan delegates, Christie insisted that an effective president trumps likability.

"We need somebody who cares more about getting the job done than they care about being temporarily popular with any particular segment of our country," Christie said.

Christie has his own fan club.

"I just love him," said Sandy Barber, a delegate from rural northwest Ohio. "He's plain-talking. He's himself. He's someone who lets his personality come through."

Romney, Barber allowed, "is a different kind of personality. His personality exudes leadership."

Part of the Tampa tableau: a slew of GOP presidential also-rans: Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain posed for a photo after running into each other at the convention center. Cain joked that the caption could be: "We ain't mad. We support Mitt and Ryan." Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum were on hand too, both with speaking slots.

The high campaign season opens with Romney and Obama about even in the last of the pre-convention polls, with each candidate possessing distinct and important advantages. The Democrat is the more likable or empathetic leader; the Republican is more highly regarded as the candidate who can restore the economy, the top issue for voters.

Ann Romney's convention speech was designed to speak to that divide. It was an important part of the GOP's effort to flesh out her husband and present him to the nation as more than a successful businessman and the former Republican governor of a Democratic state, Massachusetts.

She went about the business of humanizing the Romney family with a taped appearance on "CBS This Morning" in which she talked about the pain of a miscarriage, telling details about the experience that were news even to her husband. The Romneys have five sons.

Isaac, which reached hurricane strength Tuesday, skirted Tampa, a big relief for convention organizers worried about the safety of the host city and GOP delegates. But they remain saddled with the question of how to proceed with a political festival ? one devoted both to scoring points against Obama and firing up excitement for Romney ? under the shadow of a dangerous storm crawling toward the Gulf Coast.

Tampa awoke to sunny skies Tuesday while convention planners monitored weather reports for the storm's impact on the Gulf Coast some seven years since Hurricane Katrina devastated the region.

In a reminder of both the storm and the presidency, Obama warned residents of the Gulf Coast to heed warnings from local officials.

Republicans plainly had more at stake in their convention week ? Democrats meet next week in Charlotte, N.C. ? but the Obama campaign also had to recalibrate its tactics as Gulf residents fled their homes or hunkered down. Vice President Joe Biden was called off a Romney-bashing trip to Florida.

That's not to say partisanship has subsided with Isaac's gathering strength. Hardly.

Eager to counter Romney's economic pitch to middle-class voters, a super PAC supporting Obama unveiled an ad featuring a small business owner who criticized the candidate's record on job growth as Massachusetts governor.

Obama headed to Iowa as the first stop on a campaign trip in which he will make a personal appeal to college voters in three university towns: Ames, Iowa; Fort Collins, Colo.; and Charlottesville, Va.

Awaiting the president in Iowa: An article in the Des Moines Register in which 1996 Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole called Romney and Ryan a "dream ticket."

The two "have a program to turn the economy around that is the most thoughtful and comprehensive I have seen in my lifetime, and I have seen a lot," wrote the 89-year-old Dole.

Los Angeles Major Antonio Villaraigosa, part of the Democratic opposition team in Tampa, said Republican efforts to use Latino speakers at the convention to win over Hispanic voters won't work.

"You can't just trot out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect people are going to vote for your party or your candidate," he said. "Window dressing doesn't do much for a candidate. It's your policies, your platform."

Polls show Romney trailing badly among Hispanic voters. A Gallup poll taken between July 30 and Aug. 1 found Obama winning 60 percent support among Hispanic voters, and the Republican at 27 percent, little different from 64-29 earlier in the year.

California?s earthquake 'swarm' unusual but not rare

A "swarm" of earthquakes that touched off Sunday morning in southern California was still rolling along Monday afternoon, registering more than 300 small to moderate quakes that could be felt from Arizona to San Diego. The swarm is unusual but not as rare as you might think.

During an earthquake swarm, an affected area experiences a rapid-fire series of temblors that are all similarly proportioned, so that no one shock emerges as the obvious source of the rest. According to Julie Dutton, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey, diffuse clusters like these are far less common than earthquakes that arrive as one big shake followed by a series of smaller aftershocks.

Dutton estimates that the USGS records about 30 to 40 notable swarms a year, compared with 20,000 to 30,000 total earthquakes. Because swarms are rooted in the same kind of plate movements and stresses that cause more traditional quakes, she thinks that a large part of the phenomenon's apparent scarcity is based on semantics.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Hurricane Andrew, 20 years later

As Floridians wait to see what Tropical Storm Isaac will do, they're also remembering Hurricane Andrew, a storm that changed lives 20 years ago.

    2. 150 years of hurricanes mapped
    3. Most Neanderthals were right-handed
    4. Bugs sunbathe to keep germs away

Swarms ?are really hard to characterize," she told Life?s Little Mysteries. "It's all the same mechanisms. It's just a different way of finding equilibrium in the environment."

Where did the swarm start?
The current swarm originates just outside of the small farming town of Brawley, Calif., about 30 miles north of the state's border with Mexico. According to Dutton, swarms with magnitude ranges close to the current one arrive in that area at the rate of one or two per decade, with the most recent one hitting in 2005.

The 2005 swarm, which topped out with a 5.1-magnitude event, was surpassed by yesterday's high of 5.5, the cut-off magnitude at which seismologists expect to start seeing casualties in developed countries, according to USGS geophysicist Paul Caruso. But there have been no reported injuries from the Brawley quakes, and Caruso said Monday morning saw a considerable slowing in the area's seismic activity.

What?s going on?
The types of plate activity that might bring about a swarm as opposed to a concentrated quake are not yet well understood by scientists, and there's no way of knowing how long the current swarm will last (the 2005 swarm kept up for three weeks). But Dutton says there's no reason to believe that the Brawley swarm forebodes the arrival of a " big one."

"It's not something that we can definitely discount," she said. "But typically it's not something that happens when you have a swarm like this."

In volcanically active areas, earthquake swarms often indicate imminent eruptions, Dutton said. The only potential candidates for volcanic eruptions near Brawley are the Salton Buttes, five small lava domes that flank the Salton Sea and haven't erupted in close to 10,000 years.

British helicopter hunt for 'lion on the loose in Essex'

British police on Monday deployed firearms officers and a helicopter as they launched a lion hunt following reports of a cat-like beast roaming in a field in Essex.

"The large cat, believed to be a lion, was seen in fields off Earls Hall Drive in St Oysth, near Clacton, just before 7pm on Sunday," an Essex police spokesman said.

Residents living in the area are being advised to stay indoors.

Officers from Essex Police have been working with experts from Colchester Zoo who believe the reports to be genuine after being shown a photograph from a member of the public.

"There is an increased police presence in the area, including firearms officers and the police helicopter searching near where it was spotted," the spokesman said.

Police are also trying to establish where the lion may have come from. Anyone who sees the lion is advised to call 999.

Roger Lord, of Earls Hall Farm, St Osyth, said a picture of the suspected lion had been taken by residents in caravans on the farm land and passed to police.

"The first thing we knew about it was a phone call from the police last night," he said.

"I am sceptical - I think it might just well be a large domestic cat but they certainly saw something that they were were concerned about and they went down the right route to the police.

Che Kevlin said he heard what he believed to be a roar whilst out walking his dog last night.

"I heard a loud roar at 10pm. It sounded like a lion," he told the BBC.

"It was worrying as we had just been for a walk with the dog. We saw the police helicopter but thought it was just searching for a person.

"It sounded like the roar of a lion. We have a field and wood just behind our fence, so you never know."

Two parody Twitter accounts for the lion have already sprung up under the handles @EssexLion ("Roar bruv, I'm a lion, ain't I?") and @TheEssexLion ("in your garden").

Elsewhere on Twitter, many were joking about the lion being let loose on the cast of popular British reality show, The Only Way Is Essex.

Other users claimed the lion had taken refuge in the Ecuadoran embassy in London, where WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has claimed asylum. David Schneider wrote under the handle @davidschneider: "This is getting interesting. The Essex Lion has just taken refuge in the Ecuadorian (sic) embassy."

After that, you need to write down all of your household expenses in list form. Take the time to include everything, such as car maintenance, food costs and amounts you spend when you head out for a night. Make sure that this list reflects all of the money you spend.

Improvements To Increase The Energy Efficiency Of Your Home ...

If you have an unfinished basement on your property, finish it. A finished basement can almost double your property value if you finish it the right way. Carefully consider the floor-plan before you begin work. If you cannot do it all at once, just build one room at a time according to the plan.

Thinking green about home improvements not only means being environmentally friendly, but it also means taking action on your lawn. If the lawn looks horrendous with bare spots and weeds, seed and fertilize it. If it is damaged beyond repair get a new sod laid to give your home a great new look.

Make the most of your laundry room by adding cabinets, shelves and other storage and stacking your machines if possible. You can also build custom pedestals to go under your machines to hold empty laundry baskets, jugs of detergent, or other items. A clutter-free laundry room not only looks nice, but gives you more room for folding, ironing and sorting clothes.

Burst the bubble in your newly applied vinyl floor covering then patch it! Vinyl floor covering will bubble up for a number of reasons. One way to fix it when it has just been applied to the floor is to pierce the bubble with a needle, let the air escape, and weight it down until it dries.

In any home with original wood floors, the homeowner considering home improvement projects, should avoid replacing the floors, at all cost. The older a wood floor is, the less likely it is that it can be replaced with an equally attractive floor. It is much better to refinish existing wood floors. Even in cases of the most extreme damage, laying a new floor over the original one is preferable to removing it.

Make sure you have a thorough understanding of your home improvement projects. This prevents you from underestimating the cost involved or the time necessary to complete a project. By making a list of the necessary steps and materials, you can ensure you are well-prepared, and you can also use the list to seek a second opinion to avoid missing any steps or overlooking any potential road blocks or complications.

To cut down your home?s energy costs, replace your current thermostat with one that can be programmed. Many families save close to $200 yearly through programmable thermostat use. A programmable thermostat can be set to change when your family is sleeping or out of the house, keeping you from paying for heating and cooling you don?t need. They?re also inexpensive, and can be picked up for less than $40.

When hiring a contractor to do home improvement, always get your quote in writing. Without a written agreement specifying the work that you expect to be done you could be asking for trouble once the work starts. This agreement should specify what work will be done, when it will be completed, and what the cost of the work will be.

Glue your wallboard in place before nailing it! A caulking gun and the right adhesive makes quick work of the job. The advantages of quicker installation are obvious. Another advantage is fewer nails. Furthermore, the glue holds the wall board tightly in place and the nails you do use are less likely to pop out in the future.

Sometimes traditional and economical methods of dealing with squeaky doors may work for you. Here is a cheap alternative that you can try: Remove the hinge pin as normal, and rub it with regular bar soap. Then replace the pin and open and close the door to let the soap disperse on the hinge parts.

Make each room in your home look expensive by adding one high-end piece of furniture. Each room needs a focal point; otherwise, everything just blurs together and the room has no sparkle. Choose one special piece of furniture; a great armoire, a trompe l?oleil chest, an oversize mirror with an ornate frame or something else special and unique to dress up each room. Your friends will think you?ve hired a designer.

Consider buying Marmoleum to make your home improvement project more Earth friendly. It?s made from linseed oil and natural pigments which are far safer for the environment. You can also choose other renewable resources like cork, bamboo, or eucalyptus, all of which come in easy to install forms.

Home improvement has to incorporate research, skill, and detail. It is an activity that takes advantage of your property with the intent of making it better. Don?t be fooled by the simple goal, because it takes work. If you are willing to put in the effort and if you follow the tips, you can do it!

Biden postpones Florida travel over Isaac

Tampa - Vice President Joe Biden, who had scaled back planned campaign events in Florida this week because of the approach of Tropical Storm Isaac, has postponed his visit to the state altogether, the Obama campaign announced Saturday.

"Due to the statewide state of emergency declared in Florida, Vice President Biden's travel to Orlando and St. Augustine, Florida on Tuesday, August 28 for campaign events has been postponed," the campaign said in a statement. It was released shortly after the Republican National Committee said the party's convention events set for Monday would would now be postponed.

"This change in schedule is being taken to ensure that all law enforcement and emergency management resources across the state can continue their focus on ensuring the safety of those who might be impacted by the storm," the campaign said.

Biden had initially been slated to visit Tampa and other cities in Florida as part of an effort to counter the Republican message as the party readies to formally nominate Mitt Romney as its presidential candidate.

Obama vs. Romney 101: Women's issues

President Obama won the women?s vote four years ago, and he?ll need to again to win reelection, given Mitt Romney?s strength among male voters. The Obama campaign has long argued that Mr. Romney is waging a ?war on women.? Team Romney says it?s Obama who is waging war on women, with policies that have harmed the economic recovery ? which harms women.

Here are some of the women?s issues on which the candidates differ.

- Linda Feldmann,?Staff writer

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney speaks about the Supreme Court ruling on health care in Washington on June 28. (Charles Dharapak/AP/File)

1. Health care

When fully implemented in 2014, Mr. Obama's health-care law will add millions of women to the insurance rolls. If Romney succeeds in repealing the law, that will eliminate the subsidies and guarantees of coverage that benefit women. It will also end the requirement that insurers cover preventive services such as mammograms, prenatal care, and certain cancer screenings with no co-pays.

Starting in August 2012, insurers must also cover well-woman visits, domestic-violence screening, and breast-feeding supplies at no additional charge.? Insurance plans must also cover birth control, though religious institutions are exempted (see next item).

Romney?s fix for health care is to repeal the law, and allow innovation at the state level that promotes competition among insurers and makes coverage more affordable. His campaign website does not address women?s health issues in particular, but the campaign says women would certainly benefit from the flexibility Romney would grant states.

States can help uninsured women through public-private partnerships and subsidies, and they can help chronically ill women gain access to high-risk pools and reinsurance. Romney also says he would ?unshackle? health-savings accounts by allowing funds to be used for insurance premiums.
